In Jewish folklore, a dybbuk is a restless spirit that clings to a living person, unable to move on because of unfinished business.
This painting reimagines that idea through the image of a man carrying a skeleton upon his back. To me, the skeleton is not another spirit, but a meditation on the many burdens we carry.
The awareness that our lives are finite, the weight of grief that follows the loss of those we love, or the memories and sorrows we cannot simply leave behind. Like a dybbuk, these burdens become part of us, shaping the way we move through the world.
