This painting was created in memory of my father, whose love for animals is in so many of my own childhood memories. The Xoloitzcuintli held a special place in his heart.
In Mexican tradition, the Xolo is believed to be a psychopomp—a faithful companion that guides the souls of the departed across the threshold into the afterlife.
As I painted, I imagined Xolita coming to meet my father, gently leading him on the next stage of his journey. This painting became a way of transforming grief into gratitude, and of honoring the hope that love continues beyond what we can see.
