In The Little Prince, baobabs can destroy a tiny planet if they are allowed to grow—a reminder to recognize and uproot the things that can take over our lives.
But at fifty, I’ve learned that not everything we dislike about ourselves needs to be uprooted.
Like a bristlecone pine, whose beauty lies in its crooked branches and scarred trunk, some of the things I once wished I could change have become part of my strength.
Perhaps the goal isn’t to make every crooked thing straight, but to know ourselves well enough to recognize what needs to go—and what deserves to grow.
And maybe, one day, we can even hang a swing from one of those crooked branches and simply enjoy the sunset.
